Whilst hopping around my bedroom, trying to get my trousers on the other morning, I heard on the radio that Oliver Postgate had passed away at the age of 83. I stopped in my tracks and the theme tune to Bagpuss popped into my head. A strange sense of sadness flooded over me and I suddenly felt quite aware of the decline in good wholesome children’s television. But that’s another story.
Oliver’s inspiration famously came from ‘himself’, he was convinced that he was still a ‘little boy’ inside. I think a little of his rounded personality shone through in all the characters he created. Whether it was Ivor the engine, the Clangers, Bagpuss or even Noggin the Nog, there was something very human and incredibly imaginative about all his work. For some reason, (and I have no idea why) the ‘wash it’ song by the mice in Bagpuss seems appropriate here.
