Daily Drop Cap
Typographer and illustrator Jessica Hische has been running her sideline project, Daily Drop Cap since last year. Although I’ve not been checking it religiously, I have recently revisited it and was totally surprised how it has taken off and just how much content she has added.
What I love about this site is the spirit and concept behind it. Jessica is obviously very talented and has decided to capitilise on the ‘everything for free’ ideology that seems to be rife on the web at the moment by making her Drop Caps free to use on other blogs. It’s rare that genuinely great work is proliferated in such an altruistic way for nothing, especially when the work is something which is so specialised. Having run a blog for nearly two years myself, I totally empathise with the difficulties in producing regular content and making it even barely interesting. Its pretty much a thankless job and I wonder wonder if Jessica gets the recognition she deserves for her creations. I doubt it.
The artwork is superb on Daily Drop Cap and even if you decided never to use any of them, it is worth viewing the Drop Caps as visual archive on the study of typographical illustration and illumination. If you get time you could always head over to her portfolio site for a quick look – plenty of good stuff there too.
