David Lynch and Vaughn Oliver

David Lynch is like one of those spiders that hide in a little foxhole under a roof and then dart out to grab their prey. He’s a shadowy, complicated fellow whose talents are unmatched when it comes to evoking the ‘weird’ and dare I say it ‘wonderful’. Mulholland Drive knots my brow in confusion and I still find it hard to digest more than two episodes of Twin Peaks in a row. However, all his work has stunned my imagination and I’m looking forward with clenched teeth to his new venture into music.

There’s been a lot of hype recently about his new single released on iTunes via label Sunday Best and I’m told there is a vinyl/CD release in January. I think I may hold off for the vinyl release as the artwork has been produced by design heavyweight, Vaughn Oliver and it looks (as expected) to be a well-executed piece that naturally leans towards Lynch’s work. Vaughn has teamed up with a close photographer friend of his (Marc Atkins) to produce the artwork and interestingly he has led the concept of the piece by image rather than by design. The scratchy text, old damaged attic photograph and eerie perspective already look like they represent the challenged mind of one of Lynch’s characters.

Creative Review have posted a cracking interview with Vaughn on their blog. It’s really worth a read. Lynch’s site only leaves you crackling with radioactive despair and electric worry. Heh heh.
